Keeping in Touch

Technology at Camp

At Camp Horizons, we believe one of the greatest gifts of camp is the chance to unplug from screens and fully connect with friends, counselors, and the natural world around us. Without the distractions of their personal phones, tablets, and smartwatches, campers discover how to:

  • Build stronger face-to-face friendships
  • Explore the ourdoors with curiosity and confidence
  • Grow independence and problem-solving skills
  • Create memories that don't rely on a screen to feel real

We’ve found that when campers step away from personal smart devices, they become more present, engaged, and open to new experiences. For this reason, personal technology brought from home is collected at check-in and returned at check-out.

That said, technology does have a place at camp—but in a purposeful, skill-building way. Some of our classes, like photography and movie making, use tools such as digital SLR cameras or iPads provided by camp and only available during these classes. We feel that in these specific settings, campers have the opportunity to see how technology can be used for creativity and purpose, rather than entertainment. Campers learn to capture a moment, tell a story, or complete a project—discovering the positive potential of these tools when used thoughtfully.

We’ve also recently added Camp Snap cameras—screen-free digital cameras that allow campers to capture camp life from their own perspective. Just like waiting for film to be developed, campers don’t see their pictures instantly. Instead, they get to relive those memories with you later through the Parent Portal or on our special Created.by.Campers Instagram account. It’s a fun way for campers to share their story in their own voice—without missing the moment itself.

And if your camper feels nervous about being without their phone, don’t worry—our caring staff are experts at helping kids adjust quickly and feel comfortable in our tech-free environment.

Letters & Emails

Campers love getting mail! Families can stay in touch in a few ways:

  • Letters & Postcards:
    Send traditional mail through USPS.
  • Camp Today Emails
Parents (and approved family/friends) can send emails through the Parent Dashboard. We print them each morning and deliver them after lunch.
  • Camper Replies:
Campers write back on special printed email sheets, which are scanned and sent back to you once a day.

Photos

We know how important it is to see what your camper is up to! Our two on-site media specialists capture moments around camp and upload photos Monday–Saturday to your Parent Dashboard. You’ll also see a selection on our social media pages.

Please note: while we do our best to share lots of photos, we can’t guarantee you’ll see your camper every day—sometimes they’re too busy having fun!
